The Counselor in Training (CIT) and Wrangler in Training (WIT) program offers teens a hands-on opportunity to step into supportive leadership roles during the camp week. Serving as program aides, both CITs and WITs work alongside experienced camp staff as an extra and essential set of hands, helping ensure each day runs smoothly and safely. Participants may serve in either role for one or multiple weeks, allowing them to build confidence, skills, and independence with each session.
Counselors in Training support the daily flow of camp by assisting with camper supervision, preparing and serving campfire meals, guiding children through routines such as bedtime, and helping with end-of-day clean-up. They play an important role in creating a positive camp environment, supporting transitions between activities and assisting with experiences such as walks to the plush horse and creek explorations. Through these responsibilities, CITs develop skills in communication, teamwork, problem-solving, conflict resolution, and leadership.
Wranglers in Training work under the direct supervision of our Wrangler to support riding lessons and horse care throughout the camp week. WIT responsibilities include grooming, tacking, and bathing horses, assisting campers with mounting and adjusting stirrups, walking horses during lessons, and helping ensure that every child has a safe, supportive, and successful riding experience. This role provides teens with valuable equine experience while emphasizing responsibility, safety awareness, and teamwork.
Both CITs and WITs are a crucial part of our camp community. Their contributions help create a safe, engaging, and memorable experience for campers while preparing teens for future leadership opportunities. Participation in either role offers a strong foundation for those who may wish to return in future summers as full camp counselors or members of our wrangler team. CITs and WITs receive room and board during their time assisting with summer camp and are not charged a program fee.
After registering for Teen Leadership Week, a staff member will contact each participant to discuss their interest in continuing as a Counselor-in-Training or Wrangler-in-Training for the summer season and to help schedule their preferred camp weeks. Teen Leadership Week only needs to be completed once to qualify for future Counselor-in-Training opportunities, though returning for additional years is both welcome and encouraged.
Scholarships are available for families who may need financial assistance. We are committed to ensuring that all teens with an interest in leadership and camp service have the opportunity to participate. Families are encouraged to apply for a scholarship during the registration process and complete the application that will be emailed to them to help determine both level of need and family contribution.
