What is Horse Group?

Horse Group is a 9-month lease program, for children ages 13-18, that runs from September-May. In September, we assess rider skill level and pair riders with an appropriate equine partner. We begin learning the fundamentals of horsemanship from the ground up! Through multiple weekly meetings, riders learn how to groom and tack their horses, safely mount their horses, effective western riding at all gaits, the joys of trail riding and will gain an overall confidence in horse handling, riding and care. In May, we conclude the nine month program with riders having the opportunity to demonstrate all they have learned at our in-house horse show.

Horse Group is a unique program that can provide horse-loving youth the opportunity to experience horse ownership without a long-term commitment. Members often create a bond with a specific horse in our program and continue to choose them for their lease horse year after year.

Who is eligible to participate in Horse Group?

Members should be 13-18 years of age with a love of horses!

Members should be able to work independently. Horse Group is a progressive program and many skills build upon one another to develop a well-rounded horseback rider. Though we find that there are many social and emotional benefits to Horse Group, this program is not designed to be a therapeutic riding program.

Members should maintain the same values taught at Camp at The Center. We value kindness, inclusivity, teamwork, honesty, leadership and respect!

Previous horseback riding experience is not a requirement! However, members with previous experience will be eligible to ride our more advanced horses.

What is the anticipated 2025-2026 schedule?

We have a group lesson on Monday and Wednesday nights and depending on the weather, a trail ride or group lesson on Saturday mornings.

What is the cost of Horse Group?

Horse group costs $360/month for the term of the 9-month lease.

What is provided by The Children’s Farm with the lease payment?

The Children’s Farm provides the horse and a saddle for members to utilize. We cover all veterinary and farrier care, and should a member’s assigned horse sustain an injury, alternative horses are available. Members must purchase their own helmet, riding boots, grooming tools, bridle, saddle pad and halter. Often we have gently-used items that can be purchased for a discounted price.
